Hello Kitty Hangover???

March 11th, 2010

For those of you who have children, don’t they grow up so fast? For those who want or are expecting children, get ready, these little people are full of energy and ready to party at the drop of a hat for no reason at all, and they will party until they, or you, will drop.

My daughter just turned 7 this past week and we had a party at the house that was Hello Kitty themed, complete with the whole nine yards including rafters, tablecloths, gift bags, sunglasses, and a cake made of cupcakes. The party was originally from 2pm to 4 pm, and all was going well with almost all of the guests showing up, and not many things getting destroyed.

As 8pm rolled around, and her last friend left, the lethal combination of refined sugars and music from Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus, caused me to fall into a deep Hello Kitty coma.

I, in fact, have just come out of that comatose and recovered this bit of video from Club Hello Kitty as it was in full effect…and yes, that is my dad, mom, and brother partying with the last two survivors of the party sporting Hello Kitty stunner sunglasses.

Good times…

Legal performance enhancement at the Olympics?

February 27th, 2010

I don’t know who produced this video, but it is a great outlook on what and why a sports chiropractor does for the athletes, especially during competitions. Oregon chiropractor, Dr. Ted Forcum, treats US athletes in the Olympics as part of USOC medical staff, and without doubt is in Vancouver keeping our athletes performing, and is also probably burning the candle at both ends making that happen until this Sunday, February 28th, when the 2010 Winter Olympics come to a close.

I love this piece because it shows how much Dr. Forcum loves the athletes not only for what they do for our country in their respective sport, but for them as people. The key phrase of his very small narrative that I cued into right away was the phrase “performance enhancement”. It is quite often that chiropractic gets misunderstood for just being pain relief for neck and back pain, but Dr. Forcum does a short, but sweet delivery of what we really do for all of our patients, and how it is beneficial in the athletic realm.

For serving our country by treating the greatest athletes in the world, we salute you and say thank you, Dr. Ted Forcum.

Just in time for the 2010 Winter Olympics…

February 22nd, 2010

I’m sorry for the super late post, I am currently recovering from a dislocated thumb this weekend during a rugby match vs. Gainesville, and this seems like the most appropriate post at the most appropriate time.

I’m typing this post as we speak with the newest and latest therapy that athletes are using to stabilize injuries and continue performing at their highest potential. It’s called Kinesiotaping and it was developed by Dr. Kenzo Kase, a chiropractor in Japan over 25 years ago, and now is being used by college, professional, and olympic athletes all around the world, including yours truly.

The most notable olympians fashioning kinesotape were Kerry Walsh and Serena Williams in Beijing during the 2008 Summer Olympics. I’m sure there are athletes from many of the countries in the current 2010 Winter Olympics kinesotaped under all of their snow gear, but it’s almost warm enough in Vancouver to wear a swimsuit, and it’s been freezing in Florida. Weird…

I also have just registered for the classes that will certify me in Kinesiotaping in April, so look out for us to add that to our list of services that we will be offering you very soon!!!

How we keep ourselves and our kids healthy in this freezing weather…

February 12th, 2010

Vitamin D and it’s benefits have been researched and documented for many years. In a recent paper I read published by Mayo clinic, 150 patients with persistent non-specific musculoskeletal pain, 93 percent were vitamin D deficient. And there are new studies out there that are now showing not only adults, but children are deficient in vitamin D. The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey published that 70 percent of young Americans under 21 and 73 percent of adults had low vitamin D levels.

In our clinic, we see more cases of chronic pain, fatigue and sickness during the first quarter of any year because of a very stressful last quarter with Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s eve. Just think, we eat worse, we stress ourselves with mass travel and annoying family visiting, and don’t even get me started on the financial stress of Black Friday or Christmas…

So what’s the point? Well, if you want to keep yourself and your family healthy year round, start supplementing with vitamin D, it’s a small investment for the only thing you can’t trade in life, your health. duh.

This is for all new mothers to be, especially the heaps in our office…

February 7th, 2010

There must be something in the water here in Tampa, because we are having more new and current patients pregnant anywhere from just found out to about to pop. That’s why I thought this news segment would be encouraging for our new moms to not only continue with chiropractic care but to introduce their babies to care.

And yes, it is safe. I really think that Dr. Hewitt does a great job explaining what we do and how it benefits the little people of this world, but the best part of the segment was the last final comment from the newscaster around the 1:50 mark that didn’t even make any sense.

According to a safety review, children got hurt and one was killed, but there was no proof that spinal manipulation caused the injuries. My first question would be, “What was the safety review of?”

Hmmmmm…I smell propoganda.

3 strikes, I’m out…maybe I should start riding my bike.

Well, that’s it…my final attempt to get to Haiti on my own was thwarted again by the inability for the Haitian government to open the airspace over Port au Prince. I have been on a 3 week stall from the practice because I have scheduled, then rescheduled, and then now have had a final cancellation on my trip.

I was very disappointed to receive that news yesterday, but very excited to see an email this morning from my church that they will be going on a mission trip to Haiti at the end of February via the Dominican Republic. I have already signed up for it and look forward to finally getting to go and give aid in whatever way I can.

Until I can document the good works that we will do there, here’s a great story of a 7 year old boy in London that raised over 100,000 pounds for Unicef by setting up a website advertising a charity ride for Haiti around his neighborhood park. Enjoy and have a great weekend!!!

Trip to help out in Haiti, take 2…

January 21st, 2010

So I got a ticket to travel to Haiti Monday January 18, 2010, and I’m still here and on standby…Thank God because I would have been caught in the 6.1 “after shock” earthquake.

Monday afternoon, the day I was supposed to travel, I got word that the Haitian Government has closed their airspace due to destruction of the airport and prioritizing the landing strip for the military and for aid.

I’ve been rescheduled to travel this upcoming Monday, January 25, 2010, and so far I haven’t gotten any word of any cancellations or reschedules. I have also been watching the news and seeing celebrities going over there to provide help wherever they are needed. It’s nice to see that the motive for keeping themselves in the spotlight is going to a worthy and selfless cause, and not just self serving to their career. Their presence alone will raise or keep awareness of the dire conditions and keep Haiti in the media, which is notorious for callously moving on to the next big story.

This clip with Wyclef Jean and Matt Damon shows a Haiti that is destroyed, but also a strong and proud Haitian people that are down but definitely not out.

I’ll keep you updated about my flights…

Help Haiti…

January 14th, 2010

Everything happens for a reason. We have to rejoice about all of the bad things that happen, and not just for all of the good things. What happened on Tuesday in Haiti was certainly bad from a humanitarian point of view. Up to 50,000 have been estimated to have perished because of an earthquake that measured 7.0 on the Richter scale.

But the silver lining on the horizon in the aftermath of this natural disaster is that we have become a global community again, putting aside conflicts with other countries and a rebounding economy for giving attention to our brothers and sisters on that destroyed little island that need us.

I have an free flight voucher from getting stuck in Hong Kong last summer that I’m going to see if I can use and pay the difference to fly to Port Au Prince to give my help.

Pray for Haiti.

The real meaning of Christmas…

December 23rd, 2009

In a day and age when “keeping up with the jones’” and “bigger is better” has been the the epicenter of our society of convenience, the flop of the economy has served as a reality check for those with pipe dreams as big as their debts.

So we want to take you back, waaaaay back, to a day and age when we still had the plot of the Christmas story in the front of our minds: GIVING. It’s a wonder that in the decadent 1980’s when big hair and even bigger egos reigned supreme, that our society was more concerned with others well being, rather than just our own…

Please enjoy this holiday beauty from Band Aid, a conglomerate of the most popular musicians of the time who created tracks like this and others like “We Are the World” to raise money for food and supplies for those in third world countries. Brilliant and philanthropic.

So to you and yours, have the most merry and safe Christmas from all of us here at Titan Spine and Sports Medicine.
